Gus was born in Peoria, Illinois, and in 1962 received his undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, from Bradley University while employed as a student engineer at Caterpillar Inc. and L. R. Nelson Manufacturing Company. He received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1964 from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, where he was on the Dean's List. While attending law school, Gus worked as an engineer for the State of Wisconsin, Bureau of Engineering, designing mechanical power transmission and distribution systems for state buildings throughout Wisconsin, including the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Upon graduation Gus entered patent practice with Xerox Corporation in Rochester, New York, where he became responsible for the patent clearance and patent protection programs for many of their first high-volume commercial copiers, and received the John Marshall Law School Creative Patent Application award. While in Rochester, he also served as a lecturer on patent law at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Gus entered private practice in Chicago, Illinois in 1970, where he became a founding and named partner of an intellectual property law firm and practiced for 18 years, representing clients throughout the United States and in Europe, in technologies relating to construction machinery manufacturing, vehicle collision repair, plastic molding, vehicle lighting, boat trailer manufacturing and trailer accessories, marine accessories, electronics, straddle cranes, footwear manufacturing, filtration, site furniture and others. Returning once again to New York, in 1988 he became a named partner of an intellectual property firm in Syracuse, New York where he continued representation of these clients, and expanded his clientele to include manufacturers of medical, optical and packaging products, and certifiers of food products. His practice has included all phases of intellectual property law and litigation from patent, trademark and copyright application preparation and prosecution, through trial and appellate practice in all three areas. He has litigated a number of certification mark infringement matters as well as matters before the International Trade Commission. Gus is a member of the state bars of Wisconsin, New York and Illinois, and is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Canadian Patent Office. He is admitted to practice before several Federal District Courts including the Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois, the Second and Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.

He is also a member of and has chaired a number of committees for professional and civic organizations, and remains a contributing author to "Intellectual Property Counseling and Litigation," by Matthew Bender & Co.
